Boccia UK pays tribute to David Hadfield

Everyone at Boccia UK is deeply saddened by the passing of our former Chair, David Hadfield, who has died at the age of 73.

David was one of the most influential figures in the history of our sport, dedicating decades of his life to the development of boccia both in the UK and internationally. His vision, leadership and unwavering commitment have left a legacy that will continue to shape the sport for generations to come.

David first became involved with Boccia UK, then known as GB Boccia, in 2009 and served as the organisation's first Chair until 2014, when he was succeeded by John Dowson. During this pivotal period, David played a leading role in transforming Boccia UK from a volunteer-led organisation into a more professional governing body, and laying the foundations for the organisation we know today.

His influence extended far beyond the UK. In 2012, David became the inaugural President of BISFed (now World Boccia), a position he held until 2023. He was instrumental in establishing boccia as an independent international sport, leading the transition away from the Cerebral Palsy International Sports and Recreation Association (CPISRA) to create a standalone International Federation. Under his leadership, the sport experienced significant growth, strengthening its global profile and creating new opportunities for athletes around the world.

David was also a passionate advocate for the development of boccia at every level. He championed initiatives that made the sport more accessible and was central to the creation of the Making Boccia Accessible programme. His vision was simple but powerful: to ensure that more people, regardless of where they lived, had the opportunity to discover and benefit from boccia.

Those who worked alongside David remember not only his strategic vision and determination but also his warmth, generosity and commitment to the people within the sport.

Current Boccia UK Chair, David Richmond said;

“He was a natural relationship builder, equally at ease in any setting, combining affability with a quiet resolve that turned ideas into reality. He gave his time freely, offered thoughtful advice without hesitation and inspired countless people through his passion and belief in boccia.”

In recognition of his extraordinary service to the Paralympic Movement, David was awarded the Paralympic Order in 2024—one of the movement's highest honours and a fitting tribute to a lifetime dedicated to advancing sport and opportunity for others.

Everyone at Boccia UK extends its heartfelt condolences to David's family, friends and all those around the world whose lives he touched. He will be remembered with immense gratitude, and respect, and his remarkable legacy will continue to inspire the future of boccia.
