Meet the rest of the Great Britain boccia squad…
Sophie Newnham’s rapid climb up the rankings in 2025 is one of the fastest ever recorded in the sport.
2025 was certainly a busy and successful year for the teenager. She medalled at every tournament she entered, winning medals in not only the individual event but the Pairs too and finishing the season as world number one.
She won double gold at the Coimbra World Cup at the close of the 2025 season. Earlier in the year, she won individual bronze and gold in the Pairs at the European Championships.
Sophie was ruled to be too young to compete at the Paris Paralympic Games but was part of a ParalympicsGB delegation to the French capital, designed to inspire Paralympians of the future and familiarise them with the scale of the event.
Sophie was first introduced to boccia at Treloar’s School. Her advice to those wanting to try out the sport is to, “take every opportunity you are given, learn new things and ultimately have fun whilst playing!”
